Celebrate the Season of Stories: December Literacy Month at the Greenwood Unit
Here at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Mississippi Delta, we believe in the transformative power of a good book, a safe space, and a community that supports young dreamers. That’s why we’re thrilled to invite our members, families, and the broader Greenwood community to join us for a very special December Literacy Month!
Throughout the month, our Greenwood Unit will host a series of inspiring events designed to ignite a love for reading, empower young voices, and celebrate stories that reflect our own experiences and aspirations.
📚 Featured Author Series: Stories of Resilience & Affirmation
We are honored to welcome two incredible authors who are using their voices to uplift and inspire young people.
An Afternoon with Daniela Bounds Hayes
Wednesday, December 3rd | 4:00 PM
Daniela Bounds Hayes isn’t just an author—she’s a longtime advocate for children and families, with over 13 years of experience in early childhood education. She’ll be reading from her book, "Anthony Is Lost," a heartfelt story about a young boy named Anthony who dreams of making it to the NBA. But his dream isn’t just about basketball; it’s about perseverance, family, and creating a better life for his mother. Daniela’s work reminds us that ambition, paired with love, can guide us through any obstacle.
An Empowerment Session with Ky'Ambernecia Earvin
Monday, December 8th | 4:00 PM
Local Mississippi author and youth advocate Ky'Ambernecia Earvin will join us to share her powerful tool for teen confidence: the "I Am Enough, I Am Loved" 60-Day Affirmation Journal. Rooted in faith and positive self-talk, this journal helps teens navigate the challenges of growing up by reinforcing their worth, strength, and purpose. Ky'Ambernecia’s mission is to turn pain into purpose, and her visit promises to leave our youth feeling seen, heard, and empowered.
🐾 Special Event: Dog Man Day!
Tuesday, December 16th | 4:00 PM
Get ready for a tail-wagging good time! In partnership with facilitator Toye Sullivan-Zinn, we’re hosting a Dog Man Day packed with read-aloud sessions, engaging activities, and fun giveaways. This event is all about mixing laughter with literacy, showing our members that reading can be an absolute adventure. All club members are encouraged to attend for an afternoon of creativity and fun.
❤️ Why Literacy Matters at Our Club
Literacy is more than reading words on a page—it’s about understanding, connecting, and imagining new possibilities. Through these programs, we aim to:
Foster a lifelong love of reading
Introduce positive role models from our community and beyond
Provide tools for emotional and personal development
Create joyful memories around books and storytelling
“Our goal is to show every child who walks through our doors that their story matters,” says Kambreca L. Mitchell, Unit Director. “December Literacy Month is a celebration of their potential, and we’re excited to share it with Greenwood.”
